What is orthodontics?

Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry that specializes in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of dental and facial irregularities. The practice of orthodontics requires professional skill in the design, application and control of corrective appliances (braces) to bring teeth, lips and jaws into proper alignment and achieve facial balance.

What is an orthodontist?

An orthodontist is a trained specialist who has attended two additional years of training after completing dental school. This specialized training qualified Dr. Lindsey to be accepted into the American Association of Orthodontists. He routinely attends AAO seminars to keep abreast of new advances.

Dr. Lindsey graduated from the MCG School of Dentistry in 1984. He completed his orthodontic residency at the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry in 1986. He began practice here with Dr. David Bruner in 1986 and worked with him until Dr. Bruner’s retirement in 1997.

What age do you see an orthodontist?

In most cases, Dr. Lindsey recommends that your child or children be evaluated around 8 or 9 years of age.

Sometimes people think they are “too old” to wear braces. We treat children, adolescents and adults. Some of our most excited patients were in their sixties when treatment began!

How often will I visit the office?

Appointments are scheduled according to each patient's needs. Most patients in braces will be seen every 6 to 8 weeks. If there are specific situations that require more frequent monitoring, we will schedule appointments accordingly.

What do the assistants do?

Dr. Lindsey employs a competent staff who has acquired many years of experience as assistants in this office. Each chairside assistant has been trained to carry out his or her instructions exactly. At your appointment, Dr. Lindsey will assess your progress and instruct an assistant to do the routine mechanics for that visit unless they require Dr. Lindsey’s expertise alone. At every visit, Dr. Lindsey inspects the finished procedure and makes decisions concerning the next appointment.

What if I cannot come for a scheduled appointment?

Every appointment that we set for you is based upon the approximate time you will need for that procedure. When you are late for an appointment or do not come at all, that space is lost and it may delay your treatment. To “work you in” often causes other patients to be inconvenienced or results in a long wait for you. PLEASE CALL OUR OFFICE 24 HOURS IN ADVANCE IF YOU MUST CHANGE YOUR APPOINTMENT.

What do I do if I have a problem between visits?

Emergency patients are seen as soon as possible. Fortunately, there are very few “emergencies” that result from wearing braces. When you do have a problem, call our office to schedule a time for Dr. Lindsey to correct it quickly. We give our patients soft wax to cover any rough places until problems can be corrected.

How much will my treatment cost?

Our fees are comparable to other orthodontists in the area. The amount of your fee will be determined by the severity of your orthodontic needs and the time it will take us to complete your treatment. We offer several convenient payment plans according to your needs.

Will insurance cover the cost?

Insurance will pay if your dental policy covers orthodontics. Your employer should be able to explain to you what your dental policy covers and the portion of the fee you could expect to pay. We will explain our procedures for filing insurance at your orthodontic visit and will work with you to get your maximum benefits throughout your treatment.

What about regular dental check-ups?

You should continue to see your family dentist every six months for your regular cleaning. They will help us monitor the health of your teeth and gums during your orthodontic care.

How can I help?

Your cooperation is essential. If you follow Dr. Lindsey’s directions for home care, come for your scheduled appointments and continue to see your family dentist routinely throughout treatment, your orthodontic result will be a good one. We are proud of Dr. Lindsey’s ability to give you quality orthodontic care. When we all work together, we can achieve the attractive, healthy orthodontic success that you deserve.
